כיוון שמבנה התרמיל הנו שק, מומלץ לארוז את הציוד בתוך מארזים.
ניתן להשתמש בשקי כיווץ, דוגמת שקים לשק שינה, אריזות ריקות של סנדלי שרש וכד'.
יש לחלק את הציוד למס' קבוצות: ביגוד לביש, לבנים, מזון יבש, מזון טרי, שק"ש, עזרה ראשונה ועוד....
את השקים הארוזים מכניסים לתוך התרמיל לפי הסדר: ראשון יוצא אחרון ניכנס.  
שימוש במארזי כיווץ ואכסון מקל מאוד את השימוש בתרמיל ומסייע מאוד בארגון המשקל וחלוקתו, כך שמרכז הכובד יהיה צמוד ככל האפשר לגב התרמיל, דבר אשר יקל משמעותית את העומס על הגוף ויסייע רבות בהליכה ממושכת עם ציוד על הגב.
